Todd Duncan
Todd has managed and directed adventure, research, and educational programs around the world. He worked as a wilderness and adventure guide on multiple continents, and served as expedition leader for research and science projects in Central America and Africa. Todd managed the Glovers Reef Marine Research Station for the Wildlife Conservation Society supporting research, education, and recreation programs from the offshore facility in Belize.
As Safety Director for the School For Field Studies, Todd managed safety and global operations for semester programs on their international campuses. For 11 years Todd was the Director of Safety, Security and Emergency Preparedness for the Sierra Club where he led the development of the safety department and initiated the organizational safety, security, and enterprise risk management systems that defined the institutional approach to operational risk.
Today, Todd consults for University travel, alumni and study abroad programs, research projects and field stations, expeditions and adventure programs, ranch operations, non-profit programs and events, and corporate security.
A native of Montana, Todd is a life-long fisherman, world traveler, and mountain athlete.
Our Story
SeaBear Safety was born from an incident in Torngat National Park in Northern Canada where an Outings participant was pulled from their tent by a polar bear, rescued by the group, and a long arduous emergency medical response was put into motion. While that participant went on to both an extraordinary recovery and to enjoy multiple future trips, investigations and review revealed breaks in many links of the operational chain - from communications to culture, equipment choices, vendor management to policy, human organizational performance and evacuation resources. The lessons learned from that trip made enduring impressions that helped shape the need for a risk consultancy that linked the often disparate safety and security elements into a holistic risk management system. Only by melding each operational component into functional, practical systems can programs practice full-scope safety, security, and preparedness across programs and enterprise.
